Using render to back decorative designs

Hello All,

Whils on holiday this summer, around out hotel in spain there were many exrernal area walls rendered for raised flower bed and set in the beds were water features in what looked like the same render. Also around the pool were different watterfall type features made free hand from what appears to be the same stuff.

I ave put a pic up (not that great) but its the brown around the edge of the pool and the wall in the backgroung and the fountain next to the palm tree.

Any ideas how I could try and create the same effect.
