Is it as simple as connecting live to one pole and neutral to the other pole?
Yes.

I would connect the "neutral" wire of the flex to the "neutral" pin on the plug even though in your setup neither pin will actually be a neutral.

Note that american color code is

Black- live (they call it hot)
White- neutral
Green- earth.

I take that as a 'no', then - but at least you got a specific answer!

However, as you said before, it could well just be them playing safe. If I were in your position, and were prepared to accept the risk that the router might possibly suffer or die as a result (although I personally doubt that), I think I would probably 'give it a go' with an adequately powered transformer, and keep all sorts of things 'crossed' :)
