More Eurobans on the way ?

My hunch is that these lower-wattage cleaners will need to be replaced more often, and have the Euronits thought of the environmental costs of that?

If they did, I bet it was followed shortly after by the phrase "Sales Tax"

Is there a dodge for 'Commercial" vacuum cleaners to be higher powered, in the same way that we can buy "Rough Service" 100w bulbs?

Don't suppose you have any actual facts for that? I can see no reason why that should be so. Note that all Dyson machines fit the regulations.

Also please would the whingers note that when the regulations were announced the coalition government thought they were just great but didn't think they went far enough.

No facts, just a gut feeling from experience. But why not go the whole hog, then, and have vacuum cleaners powered by a couple of Duracell AA batteries?

My point exactly. Even our government is dimmer than it should be. Powerless and inefficient.

Think this through logically because it's not just about vacuum cleaners. Anything we do ultimately requires energy. On that basis, the Eurocrats could restrict everything we do in the name of saving the planet.

Fast-forward ten years: in the interests of saving the planet, we will be ordered to restrict our central heating to 65 degrees. We will have to switch lights off by 11pm, and we will only be allowed to drive our cars on alternate days of the week.

Street lights will be switched off after midnight; foreign holidays will be banned and we will be restricted in the amount of food we buy because that will reduce transport emissions.

We could, in other words, end up with a de-facto communist EU, with a top-down command economy, under the guise of saving the planet. Meanwhile, the Eurocrats will still be whisked about in their BMWs and Mercs, just like the nomenclatura in the former USSR.

- good ol' James Dyson's gear is all compliant with the new dictat (I think),......

Just his prices are over the limit. And the things are over complicated, weigh a ton and don't last as long as the price would suggest.

Apart from that, they are compliant. ;)

Prices? If you say so - I don't think they're noticeably worse than the competition.

Weight? Never struck me as being burdensome; never picked one up and thought "Crikey!"

Reliability? Only on second one in 20 yrs, and only bought that as SWMBO no longer liked the colour of the old one. Save reattaching the power cord (due to "I'll just get to that corner without unplugging it from the far side of the room"), only "maintenance" I've ever done is cleaning out the filters as per the instructions. So, can't complain on that score.

Over-complicated? I'll give you that one - switching it on and pushing it is very trying sometimes

Perhaps I'm not comparing like with like, but you can buy three of these

http://groceries.asda.com/asda-webstore/landing/home.shtml#/product/910000297901

and have £20 left over, or one of these

First time I used a Dyson upright was at a customer's house. Had to ask her where the button was to turn it on. Then ask again how you extend the handle ans remove nozzle from it's holder.

And it sucks!

The logic of reducing motor power is questionable.

A smaller motor is more likely to burn out sooner than a larger motor, for the same area of carpet to be cleaned.

Only if you presume "linear" technology development.
Given a big enough incentive / moment of inspiration / kick in the @ss, someone might come up with something truly revolutionary.

To be fair to you, I also bought a £50 bagless cylinder vac from Argos, solely for hoovering the car out (got bored of getting an old piece of carpet out onto the gravel drive, to stand the Dyson on). Again, apart from cleaning the filters (and having to replace the hose, which kept splitting at the end, and therefore getting shorter and shorter), it has worked fine for years of occasional, light use. It does get very hot though, so bet it is very inefficient, relative to the Dyson.

Never bought a Dyson , put off by a repair shop who specialise in just repairing them . They seem to be doing well as there is a waiting list if you want a repair.
Miele for us.

Argument aside has anyone on here actually got a 2000 w vacuum? I've checked ours and the Hoover is 800w , we have a Kirby of 635w and a couple of Henrys that are 1100w.

got a Miele 2200w which is brilliant, specifically for pet owners and has an average life of 20 years
