My neighbour is having their garage re-roofed, but the "roofers" seem to have convinced her, or she has decided for some reason, to remove a large amount of original architechtural detail. It is a shame as this is reflected on the attached semi and is a nice feature of the house.

Let me be clear, at the end of the day it is their decision and I am not getting involved (it is already removed anyway), but I just wondered. If the house is not in a conservation area, can large amounts of architectural detail be removed without planning permission.

Like I said, I am not getting involved, but it is a shame if is being removed without a reason.

It won't be a listed building, so details such as that can be removed. Agree it's a shame, though.

Thought so, oh well.

I cannot even understand why they are doing it. It is just a lean two roof behind it. All they would need to do (i assume) is properly lead flash between the wall and the lean two roof, just like any point where a roof meets a wall.

It seems they just think it is easier to knock it down and tile up to the edge.

I agree, flashing would of been fine....but why only do what's necessary? Why not do a load of extra stuff that looks "impressive" and doesn't do anything? That way you can ramp up the price!

I agree that is not an amazing or unique piece of architectural detail, but it was a bit of variety. It was unique to that house compared houses in the street.

I think what makes it look worse is that the bricks have been painted in purple, and the rendering in a cream colour. Also the rendering was repatched in a very poor way previsously.

More to the point, it looks better than how it looks now. It is also more about the waste of money, when a much simpler solution would have been better.

It is basically an example of needless work.

What a bunch of morons. That's a real shame.

Nobody does anything other than the absolute bare minimum these days. You don't even get a soffit on new builds. Not even an inch! Let alone a garden wall...

Shame to see interesting architectural details being removed for no reason therefore.
