A large pair of grips but often hand tight is sufficient.
Hand tightened but got a little weep, used silicone on the seals and plumbers mait round the threads, someone mentioned a waste kit from B+Q with no need to use silicone. Thanks again for your help

Not my experience, esp with the cheap imported pottery (more common than you might think/wish - even high street salesrooms -storebath? etc) where the condition of the moulding can be very questionable.
The kit I use is called 'basin-mate', very effective, but requires a little effort to use
