Hi, We are having a wet room and will want to use a shower curtain. Can anyone tell my why it is necessary to have a support bar suspended from the ceiling onto the rail? If this rail is only holding a nylon curtain which cant weigh very much, if anything at all, then why the need to support the rail?
I just want to make the very small space we have as 'uncluttered' as possible.

It depend on how long the rail is and wether there is a join or "L" or "U" shape.

If it is a one piece straight rail, it'll be fine

Daniel.

If it has a bend you will need one, remember the curtain gets heavier when wet and your body brushing against it or sticking to it also pulls on the rail.

Would it be ok if the track itself was made of a heavier type of metal other than chrome tubing etc ???

The problem is the stress on the fixings, a straight pole will only deflect a tiny bit but a right angle will move a lot more so putting extra strain on the fixings, which will give, sag and in time fail.
