Remove gloss from slate

Some idiot once painted what I think is a slate fireplace with black gloss in my house. I'd really like to get it off but am not sure the best way to remove. Sanding would presumably damage the surface of the slate or can you repolish that afterwards.

What would nitromors do?

Any other suggestions.

Paint stripper should do the job...try a little bit thats not in view first.
