Insulating under floors

What is that ?. Looks like that thing in the Alien movie.

I believe it's a model of a face hugger, bought from a comic shop or forbidden planet type store probably, and they stuck 2 together for the photo.
Looks bloody scary though, I have the spider thing going on as well, it's not nice, I've been stuck in a room for an hour before 'cause one was sat on the wall above the door, waiting to 'get' me!

I'm glad you admitted to that - it's not just a girl thing. My brother won't do under the floor either cos he don't like spiders.

I've put every piece of furniture in my bedroom on castors so that it can be moved in case a spider goes down the back of it - I know that's sad - but I'd never sleep again if I lost a spider in my bedroom.

Ooh, I've got a guy coming on Thursday to have a look. I'll need to wait and see what he says (and how much he quotes!!!)

cant you just use styrofoam stuff between the joists, should be fairly cheap and easy to cut. just a thought or have i missed the whole point?

It's not what to use that's the problem, it's getting somebody to do it! Nobody seems to want to go under the floor - even though it's huge and they're not gonna be crawling about under there.

ask a carpenter to put you a nice hatch and ladder in first, from the house. Under the stairs or next to the front door is convenient. then it will be like a fairly normal cellar job.

Crawling down a pipe like a drain is not a job anyone wants to do.

I know - I certainly wouldn't fancy it! I'll see about getting a hatch put in. Maybe this guy that's coming today can do that too - I'll ask him. Failing that, I'll get my friend's husband to do it - he's a joiner.

Coo, it's taken a long time, but I've got two quotes for insulating under the floor. And I nearly dropped down at the price difference.

The first company quoted me £995 to do it. They are the only company in the county that does it and are a timber specialist as opposed to insulation specialist.

I spoke to a very nice man at the Energy Efficiency department of our local Council and he gave me the name of an out of town company to try. They are an insulation company. And they've quoted me £487!!!

Do ya get the impression that the first company are taking the p!ss because they're the only place for miles that does it!

have they both seen the tunnel they have to crawl through?

Is either of them fitting a trapdoor?

Yep, both of them have been under the floor. I said to the second guy that I'd get a trap door fitted to make it easier and he said that there was nothing wrong with the access that there was. He reckoned it would be grand working under there anyway cos normally they're in really confined spaces.

I was pretty shocked at him being happy with it - cos I wouldn't go through that tunnel! Apparently it's not as bad as I think it is - only about 6 feet long.
