repointing inglenook fireplace help needed
Reply with quote Thanks

Hi i wonder if anyone can help me, i have just moved into a 350 yr old cottage and am restoring the inglenook fireplace. It was covered in black soot and tar from years of an open fire which i have managed to remove. Now i need to repoint around the bricks in the inglenook fireplace so that the part i have restored matches up with the rest of the fireplace. The cement appears to be very light in colour cream/white colour. I am wondering if anyone can tell me what sort of cement etc i need to use. I presume it must be a lime based one. I hope someone can help me.
Many thanks

you need lime putty and most likely semi-sharp sand ( look closely at the old mortar and see if there is small
stones in it about 3 or 4 mm in size)
the mix will be 3 & 1 3 being sand to 1 lime;
no cement , the lime comes in a bucket with water on the top, tip the water into another bucket and keep this
if you don't finish the bucket of lime tip this lime water back on top, if you finish the bucket of lime then use the
lime water in the last mix; and you are best to hire a cement mixer to mix it.

Hi Karolyn706,

We're in a similar positon and are looking for the best way to get rid of the old tar and soot. How did you manage to get it all off?

Regards

I have 3 inglenooks, 2 are 16th c, I re pointed the old with hydraulic lime, running the risk of smoke in upper rooms, but it kinda works. for the new one I used refractory cement, running up to 2600degrees C, good stuff and much cheaper that a liner and gather, no smoke in upper rooms or staining in upper rooms, worked a treat. Guess I am too late, but you might not have got around to it yet.

Annette03, karolyn706, who started this post did so over a year ago and if you look at the post count, only ever made 1 one post, never to be heard of since.

So yes, "I am too late" is an understatement.

This was a public service post.

Nah he's just trying to make the place as unfriendly to all & sundry (Take a min to read thro' some of his other gems of wisdom) ......... My comment didn't help either as it goes .............. Looking on the brighter side, perhaps he pens negative comments on forums to make up for his short comings & general inadequacies in the bedroom........ Umm I think so ........ icon_eek.gif

what ever.

I do suggest however you read the forum rules. all of them.

also annette03 realised it was a waste of time

also as i pointed out the OP only ever made 1 post, and that was over a year ago, so chances of her coming back are very slim.

Most people also treat this as a Q & A board, (which it isn't) so they will as the OP did, post a question regardless if it has been asked before or not, very rarley (but it does happen) does anyone search to see if their question has been asked before. ands some will post the old one "I can't find the exact answer to MY problem" then they proceed to ask a question that has been asked before a dozen times.

and since this is not a Q & A board, its a forum, which has opinions, my opinion is it was pointless annette03 making her post, and if anyone doesn't like my opinions then use the

or complain about me via admin@diynot.com
