I have to plant a lot of posts to support my new deck and was going to hire a post borer for the job.

Question is can a manual borer deal with heavy thick clay soil or should I bite the bullet and get a powered version?

Cheers

no problem using a manual digger for a few holes, you can even add water in the hole to aid digging.
But if you have a lot of holes your arms will thank you for a power auger,
one man or two man available at your local rental outlet.
a hole for a fence should be a 4x4 post = 8" dia x 3ft. deep.
see posting (Wobbly Fence)

not that it helps you at all, but on the M1 they are putting fences on the "verge" they have a small Johns Construction Bucket type thing with an auger on the back.

so if it is a lot of holes a powered one will help, i believe the 2 person ones are better

A deck doesn't need digging in like a fence does, you can simply hand dig shallow holes and lay a concrete block or slab under each post. The deck won't go anywhere.

in canada frost goes down 3ft so even deck posts have to go deep or
deck will heave.
