I've looked at the wiring in my present house and would appreciate some advice. The supply is fed through an old style trip switch (yellow button) to fuse box with wired fuses. A 10mm cable about 5m long runs from the fuse box (not fused) to another consumer unit which supplies extension this has push button mcb's. Do you know what would be required to bring this up to acceptable standards?

Can you post up some pictures of the current install, & of the service head, as it will help with the coments if we can see, what it is that you have got at the moment.

Sorry camera out of action will try and borrow one but the fusebox is old wylex with 4 fuses 1 lighting 2 ringmain 1 cooker, 10mm is doubled up with tails from trip switch in fusebox so still live when fusebox main switch off, this is my main concern but never given any trouble.10mm runs to cu which has seperate circuits for the lighting, sockets on ringmains, outside lighting, 2 8kw showers and emersion heater.

If by current standards you mean 17th edition (you are still allowed to work to the 16th right now but only for another fortnight or so) then to bring the install up to current standards will require a minimum of:

1: a new main consumer unit (details will vary depending on whether your supply is TN or TT)
2: if the submain is concealed or going to be concealed replace it with a cable type with an earthed metal layer. and reconnecting it so it is fed from the non-rcd (or 100ma TD rcd if this is a TT install) side of the main CU.
3: a new CU in the extension.

Other work may be required as well depending on the state of other parts of the installation.

Many thanks for advice the supply is TT. Would it be essential to replace sub main cable as this would cause a lot of disruption? Just trying to get idea of what would be involved before calling in electrician.
