After not using any water during the day or over night, runnning taps or flushing the loo causes a short lived banging noise apparently from the loft. Is this a classic case of Water Hammer (not sure what this means!!!!). Coincindently two months ago thames water installed a water meter down stairs, and obviously with the cold weather the heating has been turned on.....can anyone help please????

Sounds as though you have air trapped in your cold water main. This is most likeley to be trapped in the feen to the expansion tank for your heating system. Try dpressing the ball valve slightly, until water runs without bubbling or banging. Check that your pipes are fastened to something solid.

try checking that your cold water storage tank in the loft has a plate fitted where the cold feed pipe comes in

Might be the previous owners hubby just finishing boarding the loft for the wife but he hasn't realised she's got sick of waiting and moved instead.
