wiring a dimmer

I have just tried fitting a single dimmer and it will only turn on and off, NO dimming though???1
Anybody help pls??

What terminals on the dimmer are what wires connected to?
What sort of lamp are you dimming?
If its lots of lamps, what is the total load in watts?
What wattage (I like that) is the dimmer rated at?

L1 has one live and ~ has the other one connected to it?
Just 2 bulbs, NO idea what the wattage is though?!?!?

just looked and total is 120W. I have a Low Voltage 250W dimmer?!?!?!

It might be a duff dimmer - as long as the wattage is between the ratings of the dimmer and they are normal incandescent filament lamps then there shouldn't be a problem.

Would it make a difference which live goes in L1?

try the dimmer some where else on a normal single lamp would be good, but i would also have to ask, did the dimmer ever go bang when you first tried it?

No it never went 'BANG' just as soon as i tried it the 1st time, it just turned them on/off and not dimmer?
have tried it on another light switch, and still same!
Think it might be the dimmer!!!
