Replacing garage roof

We've bought a house with an attached garage, it's got modern roof slates (the garage that is), which leak in really bad windy conditions, the pitch I reckon is about 10 degrees, I've been wondering about the idea of removing the slates, fitting ply & fibreglass, then replacing the slates (for the appearance more than anything, or is there an easier / better method,
planning to put a solar panel on this year so want to sort the roof first

This is a job you only want to do once.
Probably the best way is to remove the present roof and cover with 18mm water proof ply. Then fit vertical batons and fibre glass over the whole lot. This means the roof is waterproof, probably for ever.
Then fit horizontal batons and re tile.
No one will ever know that do did anything. It will look exactly right.

why the virtical battens?

The wind will continue to blow the rain up the roof and through the gaps in the slates. If you do not double/cross batten the rain will be trapped on the roof and will rot the battens. Having the horizontal battens up in the air stops this.

10 degrees pitch is too low for slate tiles, ideally for 10 degrees, have a look at metal tiles effect sheets
