I have a noise comming from my boiler. When the boiler ignites after about 10 secons there is what I would describe as a chaffing noise like a fan catching on something. The engineer first thought it was a pump on the hot water cylinder - but it wasn\\\'t. Now he tells me he thinks it might be a heat exchanger. I think it sounds like a fan but he wont have it. The sound goes away when you take the cover off of the boiler. Any suggestions.

is the top of casing located correctly and is bottom casing screw fully tightened??

It's surprising what can make a noise like that, but have you eliminated , er, the, er, fan? Easy enough to do - the shaft willmove a bit axially and sometimes that's enough for the small motor-cooling fan thing to scrape onthe metalwork. Sometimes new fans come like that!

Thanks chaps. The casing does appear to be in order.

The boiler is actually five years old.

There is a small fan which you can see when you take the cover off but the noise seems to be comming from behind that towards the back of the boiler.

The chaffing noise seems to be slower than the rotation of the small fan.

have come across the same sound several times, and it has been the heat exchange, it can be caused by debris causing hot spots, or a casting fault, or scale

i would make sure you rule out EVERY other option b4 changing this as its very expensive
