Ideas for improving this cemented area in my garden?

I would be really grateful if anyone could recommend a CHEAP and EASY way for me to improve this cemented area of my garden (apart from giving it a good hose down). Not sure if I can lay slabs directly on to concrete? And if I could how easy it would be. I will do anything to make this look better, even just for the short term until we have some cash to get someone in to do an overhaul.

Gravel boards round the edge and cover it in shingle.
Decking.
Damn good clean and pots / planters dotted around it, couple of climbers up the fence and a garden table and chairs.

Anything to take the eye off of the concrete slab really!
