Local Paper Advertising

We had limited space too to begin with. Imagination can go a long way. Looking forward to your copy.

Before I got back into the saddle I placed an ad for my services also.
The problem was that the people that answered the ad were generally trying to get somethnig for nothing and I would have needed to have at least a dozen jobs on the go at once to make it work.
Maybe some of the more specific mags would be better such as the self build ones.
I know that these cost mega bucks but at least once you get going you get away from the idiots that think you'll work for peanuts.
looking forward to seeing the ad however, I agree with woodyoulike though, it needs to have a strong eyecatching design in order to get the punters. [/i]

Not really, it needs to have a catching, beneficial for your clients (hate the word punters) headline. Simple design is always best, no fancy items that distract from the real message.

 I already do work for peanuts and am happy to do so until I have more regular work/can start getting referrals. I've not lost a job due to price yet, I'd sooner have some work than none. I'm aiming at Fred Blogs who wants a tin pot extension on the back of his house planning for £4-500, regs for £4-500 and anything bigger is all the better. I'm the only technician advertising such services in the paper (there may be a reason for this!) My ad has cost about £450 for the 6days/week for 8 weeks and is about 2cm x 2cm and black and white with limited text. The bigger you go the more expensive it becomes (obviously) and the bigger chance I take! As you say a 1/4 page ad in another other trade mag such as SelfBuild & Design or Devon Life is about £500 per month and is another gamble! An 1/8 page ad in Devon Life is about £250.

Some first ideas

"How to get your planning permission granted first time round"

"Tired of hiring more than one specialist - here's your answer"

"Darling, did you see how quick and simple xxx's extension got sorted? Planning and all? Can we have the same?"
;)

Homework: write 50 headlines, the crazier sounding the better and select the best 5 to try out, I'm sure you can edit your ad weekly? Add a quote reference to each change - offer free consulting for quoting that reference - and track responses (that's how we did it.)

Example: "for a free consultation call xxx132/xxsdf now and quote ABC10/7"

Hmm, thats over half the ad words taken though! As you say may be worth changing it now and then.

Freddy, do you get any of the smaller free glossy mags down your way. If devon life is like teh sussex one then its expensive and not aimed at the market youre going for. We have a string of them down here that target individual areas. We started advertising with one last year and its bought loads of work in locally. Weve slowley added more areas and its proving to be more sucessful. Im now just about to start writing a monthly garden column for them in exchange for some free and well placed regular advertising. Its the sort of magazines that most people say they hang onto and dont throw away. Well worth the money and bit more read than the local papers
