Decided to renovate our downstairs loo - found there are no isolation valves. Tried to turn the gate valve in the loft - it's stuck solid. Funily enough the one next to it which feeds the hot is no problem and turns easily.

After getting a spanner under the wheel (square bit) , it is beginning to move but only a little at a time, going bac and forth.
Is it worth putting oil down the shaft - say olive oil ? will that reach the part that's stuck ?

Loosen the gland nut about one turn.

Then try tightening up, clockwise!

Be prepared for it to possibly break but until you have tried you will now know.

If it does turn then close about three turns then run it back three turns before closing it again.

Have to change the valve - it's a 1", compression fittings. What's the nearest fitting ?
Have to do it as it's stuck half way now - can't just leave it open - Disaster !!!

Take the old valve with you, you may be able to get a full flow lever valve with the same thread.

OK thanks - on closer inspection found that the nuts say 28mm on them even though the valve body says 1". Also on one side the pipe is fairly loos and will allow some movement so should be OK>
