The plaster cracked around my wood burner, so I was going to remove the old plaster and line it with 9mm masterboard.
My question is, is masterboard a finished product that can be fitted then painted.

Thanks

masterboard is usually incorporated into the structure and acts as a fireproof lining but if you don't mind the look of it then just paint over it.
In non flammable paint of course

Gypsum plaster is only good up to around 50 degrees C; permanent exposure to much above that & it will crack & blow, as you’ve found out  . Masterboard will work but will look a bit rough & ready as a finish, if you want a more conventional "plaster" look, use a heat resistant plaster over heat resistant screed base; http://shop.vitcas.com/vitcas-heat-resistant-plaster-16-p.asp
or you can use a sand/cement/lime render mix as a base which will work just as well.

Thanks for the info. A friend of mine mentioned GRG Multi board and also Fire Check.
Any feedback on these would be helpful to make my mind up.
