I want to fit a toilet in the first floor utlilty room, the problem I have is that my soil pipe is cast iron and runs down the corner of the outside wall, it is about 3 inches from both walls. How do I connect plastic piping to the cast iron variety of the same diameter?

Cheers to everyone who replies

I think adaptors are available to connect the two materials but from your description you sound like you will need a new branch in the main stack to connect the new toilet into. In this case it may be easier to replace the whole stack etc in plastic as working with the cast iron can be a bit tricky as the joints are caulked - it is also really heavy. Not impossible to do, but not as simple as if it were plastic. If you are in a conservation area you may need permission to change from cast iron.
You could always put in a new stack just for this new toilet/ensuite if you have room and depending on the amount of pipework you would have to disturb. There is always the Macerator type of thing too which I think uses smaller pipes.

I have done a similar job by using Fernco pipe connections which is suitable for Clay,Cast Iron,PVC-u,Steel,Asbestos Cement,Pitch Fibre and Concrete. Fernco is a flexible couplings can make easy work of an otherwise difficult pipe connection and size range in diameters from 1 1/4" to 15" and a reducer if needed. It is also BBA Approved and should be available from any good quality builder merchant. Also take notes from Ant above "If you are in a conservation area you may need permission to change from cast iron". Good luck.

I had a plumber visit yesterday evening he made exactly the same suggestions he mentioned that the connection between the plastic and iron would need kind of rubber sleeves with fastening clips, he also mentioned cutting the pipe with an angle grinder, I cant see how this is possible beacuse as I said the pipe is situated in the corner about 2 inches from the walls.

My house is a large victorian terrace, although I am in Saltaire, West Yorks, my house is not in the conservation area.

Believe it or not the vent for the soil pipe run up over the roof to the apex this would be too costly to remove.

I dont think a macerator is an option really I believe they are expensive, as well as noisy.

Thanks for your help I'll keep you posted
