Can anyone recommend a good free screen capture tool. I've seen something called SnagIt thats pretty good but its not free. Is there anything similar or better out there?

Win 7 and Vista have the builtin Snipping Tool, but for XP the PrtScrn key is fine and if you only want the top layer then use the Alt key with the PrtScrn key.

Where do you want/need it for?
I'm using a program called ScreenSteps Desktop with excellent screen capture tool (works even when you need to capture a drop-down list on screen!). You can add text etc beneath the image and export it as: pdf, word-document, blog-post, html page or as email message etc.

I'm preparing How to docs at my school to help staff and pupils during lessons, etc. PrtScr and Alt-PrtScr is what I've been using so far but as the help files get more sophisticated they're running out of steam.

The screen shot capture tool looks pretty good, thanks!

You definitely have to look at getting ScreenSteps then - the ultimate documentation machine.
