When using battens around a bathroom wall, should you put a spacer on the batten below the first tile? Or do you tile straight onto the batten?

You don’t need to use spacers; the batten is only there to support the first few rows of tiles, fix the batten at the appropriate height & tile straight onto it. Make sure the batten is perfectly straight or it’ll throw you out after a few tile rows. ;)
