Theres quite a bite out of that joist under the shower trap too... probably a tad more than the 1/8th of the joist depth limit...

  1. Notify LABC of your intention to carry out electrical work, with a description of the scope and an explanation of how you'll comply with P1.
  2. When you have approval, remove all the old wiring.
  3. Sort out any structural problems relating to the joist-mangling.
  4. Design a new lighting system which does not involve trying to light rooms with 2" diameter recessed torches.
  5. Install new wiring in accordance with BS 7671:2008 to support the new lighting design and anything else which used off hang off the old stuff.
  6. Test all the new wiring for continuity of cpc, continuity of ring final conductors, insulation resistance, polarity, fault loop impedance, prospective fault current and RCD functioning.
  7. Call LABC and tell them that you're ready for their inspection.
Simples.

Get the rest of the ceilings down and sort it! Otherwise you'll never be able to sleep soundly.

So we have 3 ****s on this forum who do not believe that a wholesale reorganisation of the OPs wiring and resolution of any structural problems would be a good thing.

Would at least one of them care to provide a rational and intelligent explanation of why they believe that the wiring should be left alone and why I should not be allowed to suggest otherwise?
