Hi,

We had a scantronic 9800 installed in 1992, back then we only had single glazing in the house.
The alarm was completely disconnected since then to refurbish the property and this included installation of double glazing throughout.

Previously the down stairs bathroom and two bedrooms at the back of the house on first floor had something like a viper for shock sensor with magnetic contacts for the window openings which a person could get through.

the good thing about having this was that the alarm installers set-up a part-arm facility that activated only the front door, bathroom(access from downstairs landing), two back bedroom on first floor, lounge and kitchen extension.
meaning that you could still go the the toilet at night or in daytime without setting off the alarm and still with safety in mind.

Now that the house has been double glazed, are there sensors we can install in the two back bedrooms (overlooking rears extension) and bathroom which can be installed instead of PIRs which are produce a beam which will sound the alarm once broken like you see in movies??
which can be positioned near the window openings.

We are considering to have another keypad installed upstairs to dis-arm, but my parents are very forgetful

Scantronic 9800 isn't manufactured anymore, so you'd be lucky to get a keypad. Try Ebay

You can get a beam, but the transmitters are quite big, and may look silly inside a window. The beams themselves are invisible btw. Why not get a shock sensor like the other windows. Some people like shocks, some don't, and they aren't supposed to be fitted to PVC, if thats what you had fitted.

Here are a few to look at, the bottom one is a single beam thats reflected back. They are quite expensive, just for a house.

If i was you, i'd just stick to the pir's. With regard to the keypad, you might be better off upgrading if you require one. The honeywell accenta are ok, scantronic 9651 or texecom premier are better, depending on your budget.

hi josh451,

We did get UPVC windows fitted, the reason for considering beam detectors is mainly for the following:

-we can leave the windows opens during day/night when home is occupied for peace of mind
- as the units are double glazed, i assumed that shock sensors would not be effeective enough to rely on any forcible entry attempts
-wanted to avoid attaching any sensors to the windows to avoid making holes etc.

as mentioned before, we did and still have the original viper shock sensors which were attached to the old single glazed units.
