No, ES lampholders haven't been discontinued.
Probably the main reason that ES fittings have become more common here is because they're more widely used on the Continent, and manufacturers are now tending to reduce the number of different versions of light fitting needed across multiple national markets.

You can buy BC>ES adapters but they take up space...
