I am putting in a new light, but forgot to make a note of how things were wired when I took the old light down (the light was working fine but wanted a modern light). I tried to figure things out and thought i had it until i realised that the earth of the wire running to the switch is live when i connect the live of the live wire to the live of the wire running to the switch. No other wires are connected. Is that normal?

Check the current through the earth by connecting one side of a multimeter set to the range of 240V to earth, and the other to neutral. If you have a true potential there, it will show.

does anyone listen?! if its bad news then they dont

altho i have to admit that they can be lifesavers. i.e neutral and earth aint connected but live still is...

Not even that, these days.

Once upon a time, when there were no sheds, and hardware stores had men in brown coats who knew what they were doing, and GKN screws were not made in China, neon-tester screwdrivers, whatever your opinion on the neon-tester bit, were actually decent tools.

Now they are made from chrome plated mazak, and are b*gger all use for anything.

But don't use a digital multimeter - use an analogue one with a meter

i once twisted the end of mine tightening a terminal block in a light.... onl because i couldnt be bothered to look a bit more for my other screwdriver

copy n paste, what can i say? It wont directly quote signatures so it had to be done!

i have a neon screwdriver, but the business end has a chip in it from tightening a terminal tightly (normally tight) from a shed. Block and Quale (pint for anyone who can work that out ;) ) if i remember rightly.
