Is it true that you can now get cookers which just plug in to a normal socket??

you always could.
 
Anything (i think) under 3KW can be plugged into a standard 13A socket.

my cooker does, its gas. :LOL:

i think you may be getting a bit confused, you can get a "baby belling" that is a 1 or 2 ring cooker / grill that plugs in via a normal plug, but its the hob that can not plug in, as it draws too much current, but yes the ovens (say you have gas hob, and electric oven) will plug in (usually)
