Hi,

I'd love some advice on what to use to soundproof a bedroom.

We have a Victorian terrace with a slightly shoddy build quality, and next door live some students  The party wall in this bedroom has a chimney breast on it, so we'd be soundproofing the two alcoves (each about 1100 x 2500). It's single brick. The room is small, so space used up is of concern.

We were all set to go with http://www.soundstop.co.uk/solutions/wall_solutions/wall_solution_4.php this stuff from soundstop, though are a bit miffed with the high delivery charges!

Also looking at rock wool (which we've used in the master bedroom, shoved behind the built in wardrobes and under the floorboards) which works really well. However the stick on panels from soundstop seem like a much more straight forward option (with rock wool we'd have to do the batton thing, right??)

It won't actually be us doing it, we are trying to crack on with the renovations and have a very handy handyman. However he has little experience of soundproofing (other than our built in wardrobes!) so it's sort of up to us to source whatever is to be used.

So, does anyone have any experience with this soundstop stuff? Or does anyone have any suggestions of anything that would be better?

Build a stud wall out of 3x2 cls, spaced an inch from the wall, fill the space between the studs with 100mm Rockwool slab, then board over with 2 layers of 12.5mm plasterboard. It's as good as you'll get.
The expensive products don't justify the price for the slight increase in performance. IMO

If you just insulate in the alcoves, you're wasting your time. Sound will always find a way in through adjacent walls and floors and, of course, through the chimney itself.
As Deluks advised, to make any diffrence (and that may not be much) you need to consider studwork walls, not just in the alcoves but around the chimney breast itself, and this will take considerable space off the bedroom.

Storing your sheets and blankets in the alcove helps.

Thanks for the replies.

A stud wall/rockwool isn't really an option as it takes up just so much space.

The floorboards will be lifted and rockwool or something will be stuffed under there.

Most of the noise comes in through one alcove although I think some is coming through under the floorboards too. Mostly it's coughing and talking from the next room, plus music occasionally. Although we've refurbed and draught-proofed the window (which made a big difference) sound does still come in through there, so there's no way we can 100% eliminate all sounds anyway.

Does anyone have any experiences with products from soundstop?

If stud work is a definite no-no then I'd try something like 38x38 batterns down the wall at 600 or so centers, with knauf acoustic roll insulation packed between with soundbloc over the top (like regular plasterboard but blue, and a lot heavier/ denser.) some sound will travel through if your floor boards are butted tight to the party wall etc.
