Ceramics over plastic

Our 1960\\\'s kitchen floor is made of red and black hard vinyl/plastic tiles - the sort you find in schools. Can I just lay ceramic tiles on the top or do I have to remove them first? Are these Marley tiles?

They are thermoplastic tiles, commonly known as Marley.

It's better to remove them if you can.

In most cases once you start these come up quite easily with a paint scraper.
