Tapping noises from 1 x rad (upstairs) since I had an Alpha combi boiler fitted last summer.
The tapping is regular as clockwork and lasts approx 10-15 secs and starts approximately 5-10 mins after CH comes on and continues well after pipes / rads are hot so can rule expansion out (???)

Also tops of all rads get very hot (too hot to hold hand on) whilst bottoms of rads are lukewarm at best. Is this normal ? :?:

Sounds like sludge in your rads. :(
Did you have your system powerflushed prior to fitting the new boiler?

Time to take all your rads off and flush them out with a hose. Use a chemical sludge remover in your system for a week or so before you do this. :D

Thanks for the quick reply.

Not sure what the plumber did when he fitted the new boiler. I'll check with him.

Sorry to be ignorant but how would I get a sludge remover in my CH system ?

Ta.

Drain a rad and insert a MI elbow fitting in side of rad. Insert a funnel and pour. :D
