Our room thermostat is placed in the hall of our bungalow - about 6 inches from the opening door to the airing/hot cylinder cupboard. The wall it is on backs onto the broom cupboard in the kitchen(which is next to the airing cupboard side wall. With me so far !! I have noticed that most people have the thermostat set to 16/17 but we have to have ours on 24 before the boiler will kick in. Is the stat thinking the hall/house is already warm cos of its position on a warm wall? does this self calibration cause any probs/issues. Thank you !

The thermostat does not think.

It doesn't matter what it's set to.

Set it to the lowest setting which will give you an acceptable temperature in the room you want to occupy. Then put a jumper on and turn it down a tad.
