When the c/h or h/w or both are on at the same time the pipes in the attic sound like they are about to expolode, the expansion tank is full of hot water, sometimes the heating works ok then the next day it wont work any ideas ?

We need a little more detail about your entire system.

Is it pumped, and what type of motorised valve(s) do you have?

Which boiler is it?

What was the last work done on the system?

turn ur stat on boiler down and see if it still does it.could be stat has lost calibration. cold feed may be blocked. plus many other little things.

The system is a fully pumped system, with a motorised 3 way valve heated by a baxi boiler. The system is about 12 years old , never really had any trouble with it apart from renewing the motor on the 3 port valve about 4 years ago, and servicing the bolier every year.

If its pumping over that is a very serious fault as it introduces new oxygen into the system water to rust the rads.

Almost certainly the system will need to be power flushed or at the very minimum seriously chemically cleaned. You may find some of the rads start to leak.

I generally agree with Agile's suggestion, although I find that cleaning the system humourously works equally well :)
