In the ensuite, we have a stand alone mixer shower. We didn't use that shower for the first several years (it was a new house when we purchased). After we started using it, we found that the pipes would hammer when we flushed the ensuite toilet. If we run a cold water tape anywhere in the house, it seems to relieve the pressure and stop the hammer.
Can anyone tell me why this happened and what can be done about it? |

COuld be lots of things - air trapped in the pipes, pipes not fixed and flapping about, loose washers on taps/valves. Can be hard to pin down, but there are widgets you can get to add to the pipe if it's really obstinate. |
