CABLE ROUTING WITHIN CEILING JOISTS
Reply with quote Thanks

Has anybody else come across this regulation regarding the routing of cables:

pipes notched within nine inch joists, 25mm holes drilled through nine inch joists more or less centre of joists and about 6 inchs diagnolly away from pipe route.

nhbc building officer has refused to issue cert unless 25mm holes are at lease 6inches HORIZONTLY from the pipe runs away.

Now heres the funny bit, building officer claims the 9 inch joists will be under stress from a 25mm hole being drilled close to the pipwework notches.

However, the way around it was to drill new holes approx 3inches away from holes already drilled, and run all cables through these!! MORE HOLES, MORE STRESS!! icon_confused.gif icon_confused.gif

Can anyone explain as this has cost me alot of time and money, from what i can see for a very poor reason.

Thanks for any responses.

sounds like just someone interpreting rules too literally and making things worse not better, it happens all the time. Not much you can do about it though.

This here link may help explain it http://www.wycombe.gov.uk/uploads/documents/Environment/Planning/LocationofNotchesandHolesinJoistsA04.pdf
Do not understand the logic of further weakening the joist by further holes though icon_rolleyes.gif

This is an electrical forum. Therefore its obvious that the cable was first!

Actually you coudnt have drilled the cable holes if the pipes were there first..... not straight holes, anyway.

my right angled drill could, but if you look the wood is cleaner at the notch than inside the holes, so, electrician beats plumber.

That's not a notch, it's a trench.
