dimmer switch problem

I had two wall Lights on a dimmer switch. I disconected both wall lights and took the switched feed to a central point for a ceiling light. All ok as on and off but the dimmer function no longer works. Any ideas?

What wattage and type of light is the new center light point?

What sort of dimmer are you using?
