I am about to refurbish a 50s staircase which looks dated and plain. I'm considering cutting through the base of the newel posts drilling them and using spigotted newels.

Does anybody have any experience of these posts. I intend to glue and dowel(miller dowel) joint then to the existing post but worry that the hand rail/spindles will lose their rigidity.

As I say if you've done this yourself please could you tell me how it worked out for you.

Thanks

Gary

No,that's okay as glue is stronger than wood.
