I have a large rad in the living room of my bungalow. when the radiator gets hot, ie not as soon as the system is switched on a quite loud series of noises begin. In a cycle varying from less than a second to 3 or 4 seconds a hissing of ascending pitch followed by a ticking/knocking noise ensues. The noise comes from the input end. The unit has normal valves and runs from 10mm copper pipe running from a manifold in the loft space. The noise stops and starts instantly when hot, when the thermostat trips in and out. I have had the unit off and flushed it through before. Would there be any point in swapping the pipes over at the manifold to reverse the flow?

Cheers

The radiators the problem not the pipes, or perhaps I should say the brackets.

There should be plastic spacers on the hooky bits the radiator hangs on, if thems missing, you know the rest

thanks for the reply. the plastic bits are present. The noise is internal and seems to come from the very end of the rad. No noise in loft.

Ok, take the thermostatic head off and see if it stops.

he said 'normal valves' so does this mean there is no TRV?

could be a dodgy valves (seizing) one of my cheap and nasty one do that , to test the vales turn the flow rate down/up (or thermastic valve) to the point that noise starts then turn it up and leave it to warm and noise will start again, thus proving it to be a valve problem.

The valves are not thermostatic. They are straight forward on/off. They are fully open.
