Out of interest someone on freecycle is asking for 20/30 metres of either 6 or 10mm twin and earth to rewire his mothers cooker, is this a; illegal and b; is that lenght of cable safe, i believe you cannot use 6mm ??

1) Both of those cable sizes are valid, and there is nothing against using either as long as your design complies with BS7671, things like volt drop, ELFI, current carrying capacity, etc need to be considered, 20m + for 6mm² on a 32A (most likely) circuit might be getting a bit tight on volt drop.

2) It is legal to DIY electrics, however it has to be done in a safe way and some works are notifiable, its possible that what he is doing might not be notiable, replaceing damaged cable like for like is a non-notifable task.
