I want to change my ugly stair way from panelled and glass to a spindle one. I was hoping this would have been easy to just cut of newal posts eand fit burbridge fittings etc. However the newal posts are not there behind the boxing in. Does anyone have any idea. I have attached some photographs of one of the strange newal posts for you to look at. Any further information required please let me know.

Unusual to have panelling against the wall unless the wall was built afterward, wouldn't it be better to take out the panels and fix a new handrail onto the wall instead

From ground floor to landing you have to remove that post and fit wall mounted handrail because you have wall on 2 side is not good idea to have a post and spindle.
from landing to fist floor you have to remove the existing newel base and fit a new base and then newel post, cap, and then run your handrail and fit the spindles
I am a staircase builder ...

Parsjoinery can you explain more on this point please.

"from landing to fist floor you have to remove the existing newel base and fit a new base and then newel post, cap, and then run your handrail and fit the spindles"

There is no newal post to take out (on the picture there is a piece of 4x2 and three other pieces of wood) it looks as though this has been home made.

I like the idea of taking out ground floor to first floor and putting a handrail only - thanks.

If I take out the wood as described above what do I do about a newal post in its place.

Sorry to sound a bit vague - not seen this before. If you have the time can I send you some more pics for you to asses.

Many thanks for your time.
