While moving a socket on a spur the main switch of the CU tripped when I cut the cable. This was after I isolated the circuit by switching the MCB.
Is this an indication of a fault in the wiring?

No - it's an indication of what an RCD does when you create a N-E fault. I take it that your CU does have an RCD incomer? And that there was no accompanying fizzpopsparkflashbang from the cable where you cut it?

Just switching the MCB only isolates the live conductor, not neutral, so when you cut through the cable, you short neutral to earth and the RCD proceeds to do what it says on the tin.
