I have a gas fire thats about ten years old and the ignition doesn't work too often. Can anyone explain why this is and a remedy please before it conks out altogether.
The fire is not set back in the alcove but free standing on a plinth.

Depends what make and model the fire is, and what type of ignition.

Probably just needs a replacement battery.

I am not familiar with that fire, but it is almost certain the ignition is operated by a battery, and it will want renewing by now.
I suggest you look behind the fender at the bottom of the fire, and you may see a battery compartment there. If so, identify the battery and obtain a replacement.
