Fitting a batten

Just a quick query.

I've got to put a batten up for hanging some curtains from. The batten is 2" x 1" and is 175cm long. How spaced out should my wall fixings be to ensure its sturdy please?

It will also depend on the quality of the wall material.

Its solid stone faced with a 5 mm layer of lime plaster.

Four fixing will be fine if secure fixing is possible.
Don't drill too close to window reveal or it will breakout.
