fire surround

what product can i paint a fire surround with,think its wood with some sort of plastic coating on it but aint sure...........any advice would be great........thanx

If it is then try to rub it down with fine abrasive paper first then give it a coat of melamine primer, dulux super grip or any other problem surface primer...then, as its a fire surround paint it with a water based finish
