We are thinking of going to Edinburgh next weekend for a romantic getaway and as we've never been before I thought i'd ask on here for any suggested tours/visits.

Hotel wise, my wife suggested The Hilton Edinburgh Grosvenor, Grosvenor St., Edinburgh EH12 5EF but its had mixed reviews on Tripadvisor.

My fave would be the Chester Residence Hotel, 7 - 9 Rothesay Place, Edinburgh EH3 7SL but I don't know how far that hotel is fron the centre of the city.

Also, if anyone could recommend a good restaurant it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Grosvener Street and Rothesay Place are very close to each other (only 5 mins walk apart) and are both in the west end, being to the west of Princes Street. Both are within walking 5 mins distance of the city centre. Rothesay Place is a very nice street.
The only part of the west end that I'd not go near at night nowadays is Lothian Road. It runs south from the west end of Princes street and there's a lot of trouble there with all the pubs and clubs at night, during the weekends.
I know a couple of not bad Italian eateries in that area. There's La Piazza at 97-99 Shandwick Place. Also Bar Roma at39A Queensferry Street,EH2 4RA
Those places will be chockers at the weekend.

If you like fish and chips, there used to be a restaurant at the top of Leith Walk/London Rd junction called Brandeski's. Might not be there now (I'm talking early 70's though)
Stivino will tell ye if it's still there. ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

if you are driving go for one off the places like Musselburgh portobello etc
they will be far cheaper than central edinburgh where parking is an expensive luxury you can buy an all day bus pass for about £2.50

you can check when the races are on at "edinburgh"

princess street and the royal mile are the main streets though the centre they both travel from the castle at one end to the waverly station at the other where the royal mile carries on to hollyrood pallace the parliment building and arthurs seat

I don't know Brandeski's. The one I recall at the top of the Walk was called The Deep Sea. They use to say that it was a brothel and that when you went in you had to ask for a chocolate biscuit in a green wrapper. Apparently, that was the code for, please introduce me to the ladies.

Knowing my luck they'd hand me a mint Yo-Yo. :p

Musselburgh isn't in Edinburgh, it's not even in the same county.
It's £3 now for a day ticket on Lothian buses. http://tinyurl.com/3xmjwru
There are many guest houses on Minto street, which is a main road into the city from the south. All the buses use that route and, it's only five minutes to the centre on the bus.

Sorry.Stivino, the alzheimers is setting in now. Brandeski's was (still is in??) Musselburgh.
The Deep Sea. Yep remember it well. When our parents used to take us to the theatre, or the pictures, then on to the Deep Sea for a fish supper. If we were lucky they let us watch them eatin it.
My dad had a Scottish Country Dance Band back then and used to play in the Usher Hall now and then.
We lived in the "Pans" and visits to Auld Reekie were a rare treat. A visit to the Zoo on Corstorphine Rd was tiring. Specially when ye'd walked all the way up the hill just tae walk back doon, but I can remember the "penguin parade" in the afternoon.
I can even remember my dad driving us up to watch the Forth Road Bridge being built and I can say I've crossed the Forth by sea, road and rail.
Great times. ;) ;) ;) ;)

only said Musselburgh because i know it well

used to live in sighthill when it was prefabs then sighthill rise in the timbers but wouldnt recomend it lol

at least Musselburgh has a heart is 20 to 30 mins in the bus has a free golf course and the race course
i would rather spend £50 less on hotel costs and spend the money somwhere else

yes i agree many places closer have hotels but porto and Musselburgh have a heart of there own with lots off shops the seaside and a quick bus ride and no parking problems

£3.00 for a day ticket is it the same on the smt as well

I always thought Musselburgh was in Midlothian as was Edinburgh ??
The border between Mid and East Lothian is probably at Mrs Formans pub at the end of the racecourse. ;) ;) ;)

PS My mum was a clippie on the SMT buses. ;) ;)

Musselburgh is in East Lothian, formely Haddingtonshire. I think the boundary is just east of Fisherrow.
I like Musselburgh and Portobello too. But for visitors, I think it's Edinburgh they mainly come to see.

Visit the ocean terminal at Lieth, and venture on to the ex Royal Yacht Britannia, well worth a visit, you will not be disappointed.

my dad was a train driver who was made redundant in 69 after the beeching cuts
we moved to redhill surrey where he stayed till 86 where he moved to ash close Musselburgh opposite the 4 furlong mark on the racecourse and had many a happy holiday there untill 2006 where dad returned to redhill after my mums death 3 years earlier

Musselburgh has many memmories for me 99% good or brilliant :D :D

Mussel boro , The deep sea , Ocean Terminal .sounds like a glorified Sea Life Centre  Plenty of discharged seamen lying in the gutter in the rougher parts
