How To Stop Nuisance Calls To Mobile?

Over the years, I have been very careful who I gave my mobile number out to. I only gave it to friends or business contacts. If a company needed my number, I gave them the landline.

My landline is registered with The Telephone Preference Service, which stops 90% of nuisance/marketing calls, except the recorded voice ones.

Recently I have started to get an increase in marketing calls to my mobile, both live sales staff, and recorded messages. Is there a way to stop these unsolicited calls? Does the Telephone Preferance Service cover mobiles as well?

Yes you can submit mobile numbers to the TPS, will take a few weeks to work, it won't stop annoying SMS messages though.

Have you started any new advertising? Only because the advertisers normally look to see who is new and will cold call them. I had one from an internet company offering IT support for my company.

Don't forget as there is less work around, there are less tradesmen advertising. So all the advertisers are looking for more work to fill their empty spaces.

If the phone is registered to TPS, you can make a complaint if you get unsolicited calls.

I did this once, and (after some months) was gratified when they notified me that the company had been fined thousands of pounds (I was not the only complainant). You need to make a note of the calling number, and the time and date of the call, and the company name if they divulge it)

I always like to say "Hello, what did you say the name of your company was? (pause to write it down) and why are you phoning me (pause to write it down) and what can you tell me about the Telephone Preference Service (pause, they often ring off); and why do you not obey it?

If they are ringing from overseas, the TPS has no effect. I don't answer foreign calls unless they are from friends and relations whose numbers I have stored in the address book, I let them go to voicemail.

If you get an unwanted SMS you should reply "STOP"

I'm registered with TPS, and unsolicited calls fell off straight away, a few came through, but I reminded them of TPS, so eventually tailed off. But my parents are TPS registered, and always forget to tell the caller that they are TPS registered, but argue, where did you get my number.

Maybe the double negative question on a polling registration form confuses people? "Tick here if you do do not want your information made public", or words to that effect. "Tick yes if you don't want your details made public", silent autocall is the worst, if you don't answer, and the answerphone does, they leave a message, or silence. Or when someone sends a text to the landline, and the machine is rubbish at reading it back.

Numbers I don't want, don't recognise, or unknown/withheld etc can be dropped, muted or sent to answer phone without bothering me. Texts get deleted straightaway

I've got filters set up for work numbers so that they don't get accepted evenings or weekends (unless I want them to) and similar things for family/friends

Also calls can be rejected and an automatic text message sent with a message of your choice

But in this day and age, an agency would not think twice to call your mobile, before the landline, why I don't know. (Well I do, as everyone seems to clutch a mobile phone apart from me, I hate the technology!) So people might be missing out some important calls. Say someone had an accident, they are calling from a number that you don't recognise, so you ignore it.

I used to get repeated calls from one company - I then told them that I was in prison for for assaulting a cold caller, explained that I had hidden the phone up my rear passage in order to smuggle it in.

Calls went from 6 a week to zero.

Happened to me once

My phone went off at 3 in the morning, woke me up, I was very annoyed and didn't answer it.

Next morning got to work and found that a friend and colleague who lived nearby had been killed in a car crash that night. Her boyfriend also knew me, and had been taken to local hospital.

Well that's the conundrum isn't it ...... accept all and sundry calls anytime from any number on the off-chance that it is important, or filter the plethora of calls all day, evenings, nights and weekends

What I tend to find is that when someone really wants me, they get hold of me quite quickly

Let's just assume he went in, with a smile upon his face...and nobody must think of a cats bottom. It'll scar you for life!

Thinking back, I thought you could register a mobile on TPS, or an alternative service? Maybe with your operator?

A combination of tps and being ex-directory means I get almost no nuisance calls. About one every six months to a year, and those are from the american autodiallers.

What I like about the TPS is that it surprisingly isn't funded by the taxpayer. It is financed by the direct marking industry itself - good on them.
