Condensing boilers - is trap cleaning part of service ?

Cleaning any trap is already in the service schedule of course, problem is with the very little time we have already removing the trap on an icos isar simply isn't going to happen for most engineers as its a complete pain in the a**e (combi especially).

Especially on hours which is mounted low down. The bottom is about 9" from the floor at the back of the airing cupboard - but that's where BG put it.

Resurrecting this old thread, Dad got a letter from BG last week in response to his complaint (or I think it was just rather uncomplimentary feedback in the "customer satisfaction" survey).

Apparently they are going to add cleaning the trap to the service schedule

Perhaps they mean JUST for your Dad !

9" is pure luxury oooer. TBH the clearance is irrelevant unless its so little you can't get a screwdriver in to the mismatched fixings....it's a ballache with the best access.

the sump cover removed to visually check trap and clean as required.

Did that on one and hadnt removed the trap first. It was well backed up and dumped a fair amount of water over the board

Tip: Read the sump instructions!

Saw that done before
Wee tip turn on boiler and put your ear to combustion chamber and if you can hear bubbling then the hex is full of water so don't remove cover.
Disconnect black hose from external condense pipe into bucket. If no water comes out then it's in the trap itself.
Easiest and driest way to sort this is to sit bucket under s trap and with a cordless drill, drill up through the bottom of trap and water will come out in a controlled manner. When it stops running remove trap and fit a new one.
If you try to remove trap without draining it you will get wet

If no water comes out when you undo the outlet connection, blow against the normal direction. If your lungs aren't strong enough, try a pump like the one you use to inject inhibiter.

It's 55mins for a service and 70 for a breakdown. In defence of BG engineers, there's no way in this land they can do a full service properly in that time plus remove a trap, especially on the isar/icos.. BITCH of a boiler!!!!

It's even less if there is a repair attached to the service.

Just for the record, I never blamed the engineers coming to site - I'd always assumed they worked to tight schedules and 'script' written by bean counters.
