Newboy

Had to call this bunch yesterday - 44 minutes 'on hold' before I spoke to anybody.

Bl**dy outrageous!

I'm finding that as they invent more and more ways to contact other people, it gets more difficult to actually contact anyone.

Of all people, ironically, I used to find it impossible to speak to a human at BT. Really bad if reporting a fault. Endless menus, keying tel. no, ref. no, etc, etc. Jump through hoops and still end up talking to a machine. I'm no longer with BT.

'Your call is important to us.' No it bloody isn't, or you'd employ some more people to handle the calls!!

There's one particular route with HMRC, whereby the website instructs you to call a number, and the automated system redirects you to the website!

Perhaps it would be quicker (and cheaper) to write.

I remember the days when they used to have local offices you could call in in person.

We used to be able to leave our back door unlocked.

Have to agree with JBR (don't tell nosef.all  ) - preferred it when things were more personal.

The website is great too. Probably the most confusing website you will ever come across bar iTunes.

Register online it says, so that you can view your tax bill, pay online etc etc. So I signed up, now I have got to wait seven days until my login details arrive ...... IN THE POST!

Give GCHQ a ring, they'll probably access your details faster than HMRC can.

My accountant can call them and is answered instantly.

When your dealing with a group of people who will spend £5k just to get £100 from your account its best to let the pro's deal with them imo.

Don't forget that some of "Blair's Babes" (the 250,000 plus public sector jobs that he created immediately after getting into power) are in HMRC.

Many of Blair's Babes were (are) the failures of Labour's "flagship" Comprehensive Educational System, and that is why they were long-term unemployed. They were to all intents and purposes unemployable.

With all these air-brains looking after our tax affairs, is it any wonder that the system is overloaded and riddled with errors?

It is high time the public sector was placed on a par with the private sector and forced to operate efficiently or face being privatised. That on its own would focus a lot of civil servant's minds.

Since when has any private company been more efficient that a public one? You're living in cloud cuckoo land

One advantage of having private companies: competition.

And, in the private sector, anyone who can't or won't do their job is normally sacked....not promoted.
