I'm honestly sat oan the fence. I can see the arguments for and against and both are quite persuasive. I don't understand the government saying that Scotland couldn't retain the pound sterling though. Jersey and the Channel islands retain the pound sterling as their currency, yet are not part of the United Kingdom, so there's already a precedent set for places that aren't part of the union to have the pound. Westminster is well known for distorting the truth (and telling downright lies)

Oil isn't the crux of this matter - it is gradually running down anyway - and Salmond's assessment of oil income is almost criminally over-optimistic.

Scotland has a right to self-determination - but so does the rest of the UK and no matter how much of a tantrum Scotland wants to throw, a Bank of England-backed currency is one of our balls, the playing field is ours and we even invented the rules of the game.

What the SNP doesn't seem to understand is that Scottish independence is an emotive issue outside of Scotland and many people outside of Scotland's borders will have a strong and determined urge to punish the country.

Scotland does not have a right to currency union if it votes yes.
And as all 3 UK parties have said no having Salmond stick his big pink porcine head in the sand and repeatedly demand his way does not get you anything.

Because - for one thing - their interest rates will be set by London, and also the BoE would have to be lender of last resort to Scottish banks. In that case, the BoE would set capital limits and other regulatory matters, and that is not compatible with independance. To be independant, the Scots would need their own currency.

When it comes to currency union, it really doesn't mater what Salmond or the Better Together campaigns say: it's not their decision to make.

Plus the population of the rest of the UK merely see the possibility of having their savings wiped out and taxes raised if the Bank of England has to bail out an independent Scotland.

The rest of the UK will decide what Scotland is allowed when it comes to currency union.
The SNP can argue till their saltaired in the face about how much sense currency union will make, but the vast majority of the rest of the UK is against it.

You can't have you're cake and eat it in this case.

Westminster will cut their noses off to ensure Scoltand will not keep the pound.

The SNP cannot demand self-determination for itself, but then reject it for he rest of the UK. If a referendum were put to the rest of the UK about accepting a currency union with an independent Scotland, it would be overwhelmingly be defeated.

At the next election, I will be voting UKIP. I have no idea how well they would run the country but I am sick of all the other parties so would like to give them a chance.

I think many people are afraid to vote for UKIP because they think they are inexperienced in government which, of course, they are. What they seem to forget is that the Labour party was also an unknown quantity at the turn of the 20th century. Despite that, they showed that they were competent (not like today, of course!).

I, too, will vote for UKIP and I sincerely hope that they form at least part of the next government.
