Cos there's a bollard or stump that holds the element in place at the end. Otherwise it will hit the inner drum and cause untold damage. The nut at the end only keeps it watertight.
Yes understand the purpose of the nut, to compress the rubber gasket to provide a water tight seal.
I suppose your right but then the element is rigid and do hold tightly, but if anything it will drop slightly so its not going to be hitting on the inner drum thats above it.
