Hi,

I'm decorating a small bathroom and had a very old surface mounted extractor fan replaced with a nice new shiny one half the size. Unfortunately because the new fan is so much smaller it has exposed the bare plaster which has never been pained on. What's the best way to to build this up so that it is in line with surrounding painted area? I've enclosed a picture to show you what I meant. Thanks

No doubt your nice new shiny fan won't be as efficient as the old one.

You will have to apply filler over the 'bare' bit, sand down when dry. Then probably refill again, then sand again - until it seems nice and even.

Use a watered down emulsion as a first coat on just the filler - to ensure good finish.

Thanks Sparkwright, not sure about the efficiency of the fan it was a basic Manrose model but it has already ben replaced as the timer didn't work and was very noisy so has been changed to a Soler & Palau silent' model. Thanks for the advice will get on it first thing tomorrow morning. Can I just ask what will be the best way to fill the largish hole in the bottom right of the pic. thanks again Sparkwright I appreciate your advice.

You can get a box of filler from the pound shop.

Blend in between surface areas via a light sanding, removing the obvious plant lipping.

Pull the plugs (via inserting a screw a few turns in and pulling with the claw of a hammer or pliers). A firm mix of multipurpose filler laid high and then rubbed back with sand paper on a block will sort.

For the best finish remove the new fan cover so your repair covers the whole problem zone all the way to the new fan base edge. Isolate the fan for safety.

S&P are very low budget, manrose I would say slightly better. I would have chosen a better brand, and tried to cover the area. If you have a timer and running it for the longer periods then fan will go quicker.
